Teofilo (IRE) gelding Calaveras has shown that he is a galloper with staying potential when grinding out his first win at Taree on Tuesday.

Calaveras is only a recent addition to the stable, having been purchased for $12,000 from the Inglis Digital Online Auction in April, and joined the team having not run a placing in seven starts prior. The gelding began his journey at Minervini Racing over 1200m at Tamworth in June and was quickly stepped up in distance, before finding his best over 2000m and beyond.

Calaveras is the first foal of the Lonhro mare Calaverite, who was a dual stakes winner. Her only other foal is the Moonee Valley winner Telluride (Medaglia D’Oro).

Tuesday’s maiden win repaid the gelding’s purchase price and more, netting connections a total of $17,905 (with bonuses).

Congratulations to the owners Mark Minervini, Michelle Minervini, Peter Rose, Ray Johnston.
