The speedy Calipari gave Mark and the team the perfect start to their Newcastle adventure, firing from the gates, and leading all the way for a comfortable win in the 900m Maiden Plate at Broadmeadow on Saturday afternoon.

The Written Tycoon gelding had settled in brilliantly in the fortnight since he and a group of other Minervini Racing runners had made the long trip across the country from their former base in South Australia, and a sensational trial win on the Monday prior had Calipari in good order for his return from a break.

Under leading jockey Aaron Bullock, Calipari led easily in the first half of the 900m scamper and was travelling like a winner well before the home turn. Kicking right away with 300m to run, Bullock never really got busy on the gelding, cruising to the line a clear winner and running his final 600m in a tick over 33 seconds. To view a replay of Calipari’s win, please click HERE.

On what was a sensational day for the team, it was great to see a group of Calipari’s owners travel north from Sydney to see him tick off his maiden win. We hope it is the first of many more.

Whilst there are too many people to thank, special mentions go to Newcastle Jockey Club CEO Matt Benson, Racing Supervisor Michael Buckley, and our many owners and their families for supporting our move across the country.

For anyone wanting to get involved, we still have a few shares remaining in a wonderful group of younger stock. Please contact Mark or Michelle on admin@minerviniracing.com.au
